The purpose of this article is to explain how to set up the RAI Ternary Chart.

What is RAI Ternary Chart Visualization?

The Ternary chart is an alternative to the 3D Scatter Plot. It allows the user to look at the relationship between three parameters in a triangle shaped graph. The sides of a triangle will hold the measures for each column involved in the visualization, and we can add more dimension by using Color by, Shape by, and Size by options

The relationships will be determined by looking at the patterns of the graph. Things to look for:

  • An accumulation of points on certain corners
  • Trends going from one edge to another on the triangle
  • Trends in colors, shapes, and size

Purpose: Ternary Chart is used to plot three dependent of variables that always add up to a fixed value.

Steps to run:

  1. Click the Ternary Chart icon on the toolbar

Another way to access the visualization
    1. Click "Insert" on the top menu bar.
    2. Go to "Visualization".
    3. Click "Ternary Chart".

  2. Click on the Properties menu on the top right corner of the Ternary Char visualization, and select each of the parameters

      • Column Size By - Choose a column selector to size by
Size by: This will size the shape (circle) accordingly to the dataset.
    4. Selection
      • Selection Mode - Choose which type of mode for selection
Rectangle: highlight multiple points on the Ternary Chart (able to use in other visualizations inside Spotfire)

Point: In this point mode, this setting does not select but gives some details on that axis values in the Ternary Chart.

  1. Open the filter panel by clicking the filter icon on the top bar.
  2. Choose the correct filtering scheme.
    • This will automatically filter the visualization upon selection.

How do I mark on the Ternary Chart Visualization

To mark on the Ternary Chart, the settings menu under selection mode must be on the rectangle mode

  • This will draw a rectangle box when selecting on the Ternary Chart.
  • To know if this activated there will be a (+) when hovering over the visualization.
