Perhaps you have a bar chart that looks like this...you only have one value on the y axis and are coloring by one variable. The bars a super skinny. You have tried widening the bars in the Appearance menu, but it still looks wrong. The solution to this problem is to right click on the visualization and change the setting from side by side bars to stacked bars.
When the bars are stacked it will look like this.
